For crying out loud, give the poor guy a break! He probably never planned on such a part; he was balancing a sitcom and a movie career. They gave him an Irish “voice coach”, for Pete’s sake! Geez, the guy never had any formal dance training either, but look at all the great singing and dancing he did! I’m really picky about getting accents right too, but you have to make SOME allowances sometimes. Still a great movie, still a great actor.

    great charm, awful goddamn accent

I just can’t believe he got away with that accent. Some people are trying to say it isn’t terrible. Sorry, but it is absolutely tragically woeful. I don’t think you can even say “it’s so bad that it’s good” – I think it’s too bad even for that

  • cynthiailly says:

What I don’t understand is when he says, “I feel what’s to happen, has happened before” What does that mean?

  • denzlepob says:

I really did LAUGH OUT LOUD! Terrible accent!

  • toobyu2859 says:

Why does he thing that for what’s in store he get s the feeling it’d all happened before?

  • CantStayAway says:

I lovee his character in this movie:):):):) I totally remember this part, too…I just haven’t seen it in a LOOOOONG time!:):P

Its not a brilliant accent. But at the same time it isnt terrible. This film was set A LONG time ago. Keeping that in mind this is supposed to be an impersonation of somebody impersonating an upper-class man/woman.

  • thenevereverboy says:

Aaaw, he gets away with the accent by being utterly charming!! :D

  • asphodeline says:

I love it only because the accent is so bad it’s funny.

  • toReasonWhy says:

There should be more people like that wandering the streets for our entertainment

  • derdriui says:

Ahahah! Yes his accent is terrible, but can’t help but love!

I’m under the impression as well, especially since Conan O’Brien has had, for years, a habit of presenting his own take on **** Van Dyke’s British accent to his British guests, who never seem to have a problem with said performance. Based on their reactions Conan’s might be even worse and more amusing.

  • blackpython says:

Oh yeah, this accent is terrible, but from what I understand, having spoken to some of my British friends, everyone in Britain loves him in this movie despite his terrible accent. He’s just too damned awesome.

  • thisusernamenowtaken says:

EMPIRE just listed **** van **** in this one in their Top 13 worst British accents ever on film feature…

  • WeirdFreakyAlien says:

  • lionsgateblows says:

and van **** is good with accents

wonder why he couldnt get cockney down

but it is still a brilliant performance

  • TacticaLGS says:

Mockney was thought at AFTER this came out. So no.

  • TulseLuper says:

Abysmal accent, but hey, I still enjoy the hell out of his performance. Mary Poppins is a classic.

  • pentaq says:

    it’s mockney innit? lol

  • thomas991220 says:
